EcoOdyssey – Bangladesh’s Green Tomorrow

INTRODUCTION

This SetBook Bb module presents a fictional narrative inspired by the relationship between innovation systems and Sustainable Development Goal 11.1.

The objective is to communicate sustainability concepts to broader audiences through storytelling and emotional engagement.

CHAPTER 1: THE WATER AT THE DOOR

The rain had not stopped for three days.

In the southern district of Khulna, twelve-year-old Sami watched the river slowly swallow the road that once connected his neighborhood to the city market. The water moved silently, but everyone knew what it meant. Another season of displacement had arrived.

Inside a crowded shelter, families gathered around weak emergency lights while volunteers distributed food and blankets. Conversations moved between fear and exhaustion.

“We cannot continue rebuilding every year,” Sami’s mother whispered.

At the far end of the room, an engineer named Rahman unfolded several printed diagrams on a wooden table. Most people ignored him at first. They had seen promises before.

But this time was different.

The project he carried was called MBGC, a modular green construction system designed to create affordable and sustainable urban housing capable of adapting to flood-prone environments.

Rahman explained how lightweight elevated structures, renewable energy integration, and water-management systems could transform vulnerable communities into resilient living spaces.

Some listened with skepticism. Others listened with hope.

For Sami, however, the drawings represented something else entirely:

A future where the river no longer decided whether families could remain together.

CHAPTER 2: A DIFFERENT CITY

Six months later, the first prototype neighborhood stood near the edge of the old industrial canal.

The homes looked unfamiliar compared to the concrete blocks people were used to. Rooftops collected rainwater. Solar surfaces powered shared community areas. Elevated walkways connected homes above seasonal flood levels.

Children played outside during the monsoon for the first time in years.

Sami walked through the new district with disbelief. The city still faced enormous challenges, but something had changed. People were no longer discussing survival alone.

They were discussing possibility.

SYSTEM CONTEXT

This fictional module translates the MBGC_11.1 framework into a narrative form intended for large audience communication and public engagement.

The story illustrates how innovation systems may support SDG 11.1 objectives related to sustainable urban development and resilient housing solutions.
